Essential Oil Safety for Children:

Children are very curious, it is highly important as parents and adults to make good habits of essential oil safety. Always close essential oil bottles tightly after use and keep out of the reach of children.If a child accidentally swallow essential oils, immediately give that child milk, soymilk or yogurt to drink so as to dilute the ingested oil. You can also use honey but only if the child is over 12 months of age.Do not use essential oils rich in menthol such as peppermint oil on babies and children below 1 ½ years of age because of its high sensitivity.Ensure you test essential oils on the bottom of feet of infants and children before applications on the skin.Never use an undiluted essential oil on a baby or child. Children have much thinner, more delicate skin than adults, and tend to be more sensitive to the potency of essential oils.

Essential Oil Safety for Pregnant Women:

Pregnant women should not use essential oil that has emenagogue properties or essential oils with hormone like activities to avoid stimulating the pelvic organs.Pregnant and lactating mothers should contact their healthcare practitioner before using essential oils.

General Essential Oil Safety:

If essential oil accidentally get into the eyes, dilute the area immediately with a vegetable or carrier oil such as sweet almond oil or grapeseed oil by pouring some amount over cotton ball or tissue to wipe out the oil, do this several times. Do not use water as this can increase irritation and spread the oils.Always wash your hands after applying essential oils to prevent the oil from getting into your eyes.Do not put essential oils into the ears or nostrils.Always dilute essential oils and always carry out a skin test before applying it onto the skin. To test if you’re sensitive to an essential oil mix one drop of essential oil with 1/2 tsp carrier oil like sweet almond or grapeseed oil. Rub this on the inside, upper portion of your arm and wait for 10 to 15 minutes. If no redness or itching develops, you’re most likely not sensitive to that essential oil. If redness or itching develops, dilute more with carrier oil. For those prone to allergies or very sensitive wait for 30 minutes.For those people with allergies, do not apply essential oils topically to the nose, throat or chest areas. Apply only on the bottom of the feet.Remember to always dilute essential oils before skin applications or use in bath.

Though there are essential oils that can be used undiluted, certain oils should always be diluted to avoid burning the skin. Oils high in phenols, citrals and cinnamic aldehyde, such as thyme, oregano and lemongrass (citrols).

Be sure essential oils taken internally are GRAS (generally regarded as safe) or organic essential oils that are carefully processed.

To take essential oils internally; add 1 to 2 drops of essential oil to a glass of water or a teaspoon of pure honey. If you don’t like the flavour, you can use empty gelatin capsule to take your oils by putting 3 to 5 drops and then swallow with water, you can increase or reduce drops when you know how your body react. If you like strong flavours, you can put a drop or two under your tongue.

Other ways to use essential oils is to cook with them; add oregano oil to your tomato sauce or thyme oil for seasoning. Some of the healing properties may be lost due to the cooking heat but the fantastic flavours will certainly remain. To have more of the healing properties, add a few more drops of the oil immediately you finish cooking.

Essential oil last for a minimum of 5 10 years. Keep all essential oils out of direct sunlight to preserve their potency.
